The actor’s reputation and his wallet will suffer greatly after this case
Some time ago it became known that Johnny Depp lost in court his sensational libel case filed against ex-wife Amber Heard and The Sun. A High Court judge in London refused to satisfy the claim of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star, noting that everything written in the newspaper article was true. And it was written there that Johnny Depp subjected Amber Heard to physical and psychological violence 14 times. The 2018 article was titled “The Disappeared Pot: How Could J. Rowling Be” Incredibly Happy “If She Cast His Wife’s Rapist Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts? and contained the statements of Amber herself.
The plaintiff was not successful. Despite the fact that he proved the necessary grounds for a libel suit, the defendants showed that what they published in that article was in fact. I came to these conclusions after examining in detail the 14 incidents on which the defendants rely, as well as the general considerations presented by the plaintiff, the judge said.
Note that Johnny Depp initiated legal proceedings against the British publishing house News Group Newspapers, which publishes The Sun, and executive editor Dan Wootton in the summer. Depp was most outraged by the information stated in these articles that he was an abuser who used violence against his ex-wife Amber Heard. The latter was a witness in this case. Also, in court, the testimony of Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis, who vouched for Johnny Depp, were read, and he himself accused Amber of commercialism, insensitivity and cruelty.
Upon hearing of their victory today, the defendant – Amber Heard’s team of attorneys – said they were “not surprised by the outcome”:
For those of us who attended the London High Court hearing, this decision and verdict is not a surprise. We will be presenting even more extensive evidence very soon in the US. We are committed to achieving justice for Amber Heard in the US Court and protecting Ms. Heard’s right to free speech.
Recall that in 2016, after the divorce, Amber Heard accused Johnny Depp of domestic violence (he allegedly beat her repeatedly) and demanded to issue a temporary restraining order prohibiting Depp from approaching her. The court satisfied the actress’s claim. The actor avoided meeting with Amber for a long time, after which he himself filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife.
