Erica Ash Interview
MT: What’s your character Kendra like in Scary Movie 5?
EA: Kendra’s a smart, savvy girl with an edge who’s talent gives her the opportunity to break out and be the 1st in her family to dance in a ballet company. She befriends Ashley’s character “Jody” and they have their adventures from there…
MT: How did you enjoy working with Ashley Tisdale? Had you heard of and/or seen her work prior?
EA: I had heard of Ashley Tisdale before but had not seen her work. It was an absolute pleasure working with her! We hung out on and off set and we still talk every few days.
MT: We saw that Ashley did some ballet training prior to production. Did you also have a dance regimen to adhere by in preparation for the role?
EA: I did and a very strict one at that. Ashley and I were supposed to be in training together but I was in New York playing Nina Simone in an Off-Broadway musical and she was in Los Angeles so they found an instructor for me in NY. I trained 2 1/2 hours a day 3 days a week with homework and everything. That’s in addition to my normal workout 5 days a week. SHEESH! But it was well worth it because I felt very prepared coming to set for the 1st time.
MT: How did the main cast bond during filming?
EA: Simon, Ashley and I spent the 1st couple of weeks just hanging out in each other’s rooms or going to dinner and talking a lot. We had great chemistry between the three of us and I think it will really show through in the movie.
MT: Seeing as Scary Movie 5 is a fifth installment from a franchise boasting a long string of successful predecessors, was there any pressure amongst you or the cast to exceed certain expectations given the built-in fan base of the films?
EA: I felt no pressure to live up to anyone else’s performance. I never do. I only challenge myself to bring my own absolute A-Game to every role I take on. I feel Ashley and Simon did the same as we all made the characters our own. It was lovely to not have that pressure coming from anywhere else as well. Everyone was very supportive of what we brought to our characters.
MT: We’re big fans of MADtv- what was it like to be a part of that show?
EA: MADtv was definitely a wonderful experience. I learned quite a bit working with that team. They nurtured my creativity allowing me to bring original characters and even write some of my own sketches which I thought was fabulous. MADtv is the reason why I am a member of the Writer’s Guild.
MT: What can we expect next from you?
EA: Keep your eyes and ears open! I generally rotate between Broadway/Film and Television. I also write a comedic advice column called The Deviled Angel (www.TheDeviledAngel.com) and I make announcements on Twitter: @TheEricaAsh Stay Tuned… but I’m going to try to squeeze in a mini vacay before I start my next project if the dates work out.
MT: Where can people go to stay updated on your latest news? (Do you have a Twitter, official website, etc…)
EA: Let me say that I truly appreciate my fans and all the support you all have given me over the years. Welcome to my new fans and I hope that I can bring you joy, laughter and pure entertainment. You can follow me on Twitter (@TheEricaAsh), Facebook (eash11), Instagram (TheRealEricaAsh) and check in daily for my comedic advice on www.TheDeviledAngel.com.
MT: Describe your co-stars Ashley Tisdale and Simon Rex each by using one word.
MT: Where were you when you found out you’d landed the role of Kendra?
EA: At a friend’s house packing to go to New York to start my Off-Broadway musical.
MT: What was is like working with director Malcolm D. Lee?
EA: He was very personable and honest. I learned a lot watching him and truly enjoyed the experience.
MT: Who was one of your favorite cameos during the making of the film?
EA: Loved Molly Shannon! LOVED.
MT: Was it at all difficult to keep the plot under wraps given the presence of paparazzi around set?
EA: Not really.. they may have snapped a few photos (and that’s their job) but they didn’t talk to us or ask us any questions.
A special thanks again goes to both Erica and David for their time and generosity- this interview has us even MORE excited for Scary Movie 5!
